Kurt stares at the napkin, re-reading the neat cursive of words he hasn’t quite processed yet.
You’re beautiful when you read
It’s short, just a small sentence - an observation, really - but it’s so, so much more.
His eyes scour the coffee shop, sweeping over couples and school kids and business people in crinkled suits. He wonders what kind stranger left the note, who noticed little old him, tucked away in the corner, completely absorbed in a battered copy of Pride and Prejudice.
Somehow, the thought of a stranger looking from afar isn’t creepy. He imagines a kind face, warm eyes and the brightest of smiles. Maybe a man his own age, studying a few blocks from here, with a thirst for knowledge and a thrill for life.
Hiding a smile of his own, Kurt folds the napkin and slips it into his satchel, the words staying with him as he leaves the shop and walks.
